Donate
I don't mean to beg for money in any way, but I would like to make known what I work on for so many hours without pay, and would highly appreciate any donation, whether monetary, intangible, or hardware and such.
I spend a large portion of my time doing open source development, blogging, and releasing whatever I do (if applicable) into public, as public domain or open source. While I have not received payment, I have received so much more than any sum of money through the learning, the reward of seeing how my projects are used. What I have received from working on open source is priceless, however I am not without financial responsibility. I work as a freelancer and only get the occasional contract work, so my income is quite low and barely meeting what I need to get by. I have to pay for living expenses, maintain my computers and network so that I can work on open source in the first place, pay for the VPS that hosts this website, and need to save up for housing. While I am not the best C programmer, most understanding network engineer, or most up-to-date PC tech, in my years of open source I have learned that anything is possible, by anyone. I need to go further into detail on this to hopefully sound less insane, but my dream is to revolutionize computing and other facets of life. I want to start a new era of truly well designed computing, with everything from low level networking, to data presentation rexamined and reconsidered. I want to turn Icadyptes into more than just a Linux distribution, yet benefit the rest of open source and computing by making new standards and advancing the potential of computing. No matter how things go, I will always believe and follow the open source mentality.
While the projects page shows more detail on why I feel I have done enough to reasonably ask for donations, I will say a few bits here. I have probably spent well over a thousand hours on Zenserver alone, and possibly the same length of time on the Icadyptes. Zenserver was reasonably well used in its days (but now deprecated), and was beneficial to many people. Icadyptes is only used by a few and currently more just benefits me, but I do try to do as much as I reasonably can by submitting bug reports and the occasional patch (though I will try to share more patches upstream in the future). My dreams are large, but mean a lot to me. I will work on what I feel I should do with or without payment, but I do have expenses and wish to keep as much time as I can to open source work. Please do not feel obligated to donate no matter how much time I may have spent supporting you directly or developing Icadyptes, but if you wish to donate, it would help tremendously. I will not accept any money with strings attached, as I believe that open source is meant to be completely open without monetary agenda. But if you have a feature request or idea that suits the project, I may certainly work towards implementing it (or perhaps could be paid to make it modularly for you). Note that any donations via Paypal will go to my dad's account, for the time being. If you are willing to donate hardware (or even things useful around the house that won't directly contribute to open source) and pay for shipping (though I may be able to pay for shipping in some cases), it would be a huge help as well. However, please contact me to see if the hardware is actually needed or not.
Thank you for making Icadyptes, this website and blog, and my life as I know it possible,
Teran McKinney (sega01)
